Car Trouble

Articles - This and That

Well to say the least this weekend was not a lot of fun for me. As many of you expected me to be at the MDRA race for Round 9 at Doublin Gap I unexpectedly wasn't there. Unfortunetly I ran into some car trouble...well box van to be exact. Last weekend when I was leaving Budds Creek on my way home from round 8 of the MDRA series my box van, or motorhome as I like to call it now that it has a shower and all those goodies, decided it didn't like to shift. I ended up pulling over and letting the rolling brick cool down as the temp gauge started rising above normal and then set back on my way home form Maryland. This time she ran fine. Shifted smooth, and at one point I didn't have any problem going well over 60mph, while still staying in the legal speed limit of course. Then I was using it to pick up some things during the week and it started acting up again to the point where the only way I could get anywhere was if I crawled at a staggering 20MPH. Unfortunetly, if my vehicle doesn't run I can't get to the races. Yes I could have drove my pickup but then came the problem if I don't fix it now how am I going to fix it during the week while I'm working? and I came to the conclusion that the best thing to do, also the worst for the weekend, was to tap out and fix the rolling brick and that is how I spent my weekend, under the hood of that beast.

With Lorettas coming up only two weeks away I got stuck between a rock and a hard place. Sometimes life goes your way and sometimes it doesn't, and I seem to have the worst luck. So with that being said, its not an excuse but it is my explanation of why I wasn't around this past weekend, and from the looks of the racers that showed up it looks like I really missed out on delivering everyone some good race coverage. So I apologize to everyone that wanted to see the Saturday night video from Saturdays practice and expected to catch themselves here on EastMX from Sundays race coverage. Anyway looks like I'll still be taking the drive to TN for Lorettas and focusing on all the east coast motocross racers showing everyone else how the east side gets it done.

If you're looking for photos from the MDRA event at Doublin Gap, Rob Harris was on hand to snap some photos and will be posting a written report Wednesday of all the racing.

By the way, thank you for those who offered to lend a hand.

Cumberland Cycle's Doors Closed!!

Articles - This and That

                                                                                                                                                                                      CUMBERLAND KAWASAKI DOOR'S CLOSED!!

This was Cumberland Kawasaki's entrance to the building back in the 1980's. It was actually the back end of another building at that point. The first time I walked in the place I was shocked to see all this cool Kawasaki stuff crammed in the back of some other store, kinda?. But with in a few minutes I was greeted by the owner, Jerry. And we had officially started a multi-year racing relationship, and then became friends as well.  I rode for Jerry for about 5 years myself. And guys like Steve Herman, Jeff Yentzer, Chris & Alan Gavlak, Jimmy Wilson, Kenny Kauffman, Team Greens Wes Turner and many more rode threw their legs over Cumberland Kawasaki bikes. The Carlisle based shop opened its doors way back in 1983. Threw those years, Jerry carried Can-am, ATK, Kawasaki's and in the last several years Suzuki  also. For a small town shop, Jerry made the best of it for almost 30 years. December 30th the Cumberland Cycle Center closed it's doors. An ending of an ear for sure. I know when I drive down High St. in Carlisle Pa. now, it will never be exactly the same without the long time Cycle shop's sign's out front.

Inside the Cumberland shop was a bit tight, even in the newer loctation across the parking lot made in the 1990's. But sometimes smaller is better. I am sure I will get emails from the lady fans disagreeing with me. But the facts remain, some people like to deal with a "small" town business man who's sights are not set so high they over look the guy that just needs a lever, oil, or even just stopped to look around. After all, to get someone in the store is the key right? From that point it's all about the store and service they provide. And Jerry provided a great service for many years. To locals both on and off the road. And I personally thank him for the help he offered and gave me over the years. Like the country song says, "they are shutting Detroit down"........only it's not just Detroit!

This is Team Cumberland here. Jim in sales, Jerry owner and Jay working the wrenches in the back.  All three guys have been in this sport a long time. Jim I have known for many many year's as a sales rep. First for the Honda BMW motor sports shop and then for Cumberland. I am not sure what Jim has in store next. But with his sales skills he should not have a tough time keeping busy in the near future. Jerry's options are open  at this point to many things. From moving to the FL. Keys, which sounds like a Parrot head's dream move to me, to work in a shop. Or just do his own deal and stay right here in central Pa. I myself would love to see Jerry back at the tracks again in 2010. With all he knows, he's an asset at any track on the weekends if he chooses to be their. Good Luck to all three guys, I wish you simply the best in whats next for you.

After almost 30 years of servicing the needs and wants of motorcycle enthusiast in the Carlisle Pa. area. Cumberland Cycle's has closed it's doors. The last rider has rode off, with what I am sure is great deal in no matter what he bought. Like shop always provided. I know the Kawasaki dealership was sold to a place close by called Motovation. And the rest I am hearing was sold right in my neck of the woods Perry County. Though, I not 100% on those details yet. Anyway you slice it, doors close for some, and open for others. It is the cold hard facts of business and life. We can only hope to enjoy each and every day as it passes, and maybe slow down a minute and appreciate what all we do still have in this great sport and country. I am the first to agree things are a mess now, by evidence of this closing right here. But I am also a believer in that we are a strong nation, a strong work force and strong minded people. That now things can only go so far south before they have no choice but to go up, right?. And I hope that's the point at which we are at now.  And going back up again! It's a sad day to lose a track, a shop, a racer and even a fan. My flag was at half mask this day.........Thanks Cumberland Cycles and Jerry, for the many years of service to our beloved sport. And thanks for helping me out was back in the early. You'll be missed.

Pin Up Girl #4 Ashley

Articles - This and That

There is only a few more posts left to make on GMXR.net and then everything will be all under the EastMX.com logo banner and title. We are in the process of making the change over now, though as I type this my partner has just recently been released home from Jefferson Hospital in Philly. Jace is doing a lot better and looks forward to getting back to work. Thanks for many of your emails and kind words on Jace. A really talented young kid who's work is top notch. Thank you for patients. We will be operating full time with daily updates very soon. Look for many new and great things in 2010 at EastMX.com.

Here we are on Pin -Up girl #4 Ashley. And most of you know and or see her on regular basis. Truly a girl next door. She is a staple of the Sleepy Hollow staff. Ashley may be one of the most accessible girls helping out in 2010. You can find her working at the races or supporting her national riding boy friend Jeremy Cook at the races. Ashley also help put together and run the 2009 Ms Motorama pageant. Maybe one of the best years I have seen in a long time. So good job there Ashley. I asked Ash, like the rest, to give us a preview of 2010. And she was happy to help out. So here's a few hot courtesy of Ashley and a little bio. Thanks Ash!:)

Ashley surely has some skills on the other side of the lens. She's easy on the eyes at the start line too, maybe to distracting for some. I do know she takes her job serious and works very hard. She is great with MX community and always at the tracks. I asked her to write something about herself and here's what Ashley had to say;

Hello to everyone,
My name is Ashley, I am a huge motor sports enthusiast just like you. I've been involved with motor sports my whole life whether it was playing around on 3 wheeler or snowmobiling in the winter. Most of you already know me from working the gate at Sleepy Hollow or supporting my boyfriend on the #360 machine. I used to sell motorcycles for a living so I have an idea of what is going on, but by no means am I a mechanic... Mr. Cook is working on that though ha ha. I have done some pretty cool things involving motor sports. I’ve traveled around with IMS (International Motor Sports Tour) and was part of the promotional modeling group for the Balls Of Steel Stunt Show. Through them I was able to hangout with Travis Pastrana, The Adrenaline Crew, and Street Bike Tommy. Presently I run and coordinate the Ms. Motorama pageant, and do some promotional modeling. I'm looking forward to the 2010 race season to see the great racing just like in years past. I wish you all good luck and hope to see you all this coming year!

MDRA 2009 season Winner's Part 2

Articles - This and That

Round two for the GMXR.net awards are here. All the kids, guys, and girls did a great job all year long following such a great series, the MDRA. I know the series sponsors, promoters and tracks are looking to do even more in 2010. All to give you and I more bang for our buck. And in times like these, I can only say thanks to all of them. I know AMS, FastMann, MCC, EVO, Tucker Rocky, Custom Home Loans, Twiggs, Yohe Paving, Beckley's RV, OE RV, R&B Racing, MGX Unlimited, ASR4 suspensions, WMX Extreme, and Bottle Run Extreme all deserve a HUGE thanks for their commitment and help in the MDRA for 2009. I hope to all of them back in 2010 as well. Without sponsors like that, a series is really to tough to pull off. So my hats off to all the sponsors, thanks!

That is all of the MDRA champions for 2009. And again I have to thank JC Benson and Jim Bull Photo to help make it all happen.  Many of you have requested these type posters made, and others want duplicates made. I can and will surely help you out if we can. But first we have to have all the photos threw out the year to make such a poster. I feel safe to say if your an MDRA and Ultimate series regular, we can handle it for you. You can email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it for more info. Thank you all for a great year. I look forward to 2010 under the EastMX.com tent. I will continue to do the same deal as now, just with the help of others such as Jace Wade and other already mentioned. Thank you all....

2009 MDRA season winners Part 1

Articles - This and That

First this week I want to start it off by giving the MDRA season champions a big shout out. The season is over, the banquet is also now over. And all in all, even with some rainy events it was a terrific a season with the addition of Budds Creek for 2009. And the MDRA, if you missed out, has announced  that Pagoda MX Club to host one event in 2010. And that is a BIG bonus to the series. Pagoda is regarded by many, as the best D-6 track around. While the track is surely subjective to each racer and family. The staff and crew is second to none in my book. I am extremely stoked that Pagoda is now a part of the MDRA. A great track in a great series.

As for the MDRA, there is more news in that you can run transponders in 2010 in Saturday's practice. I do not have all the details yet on fee's and such. But I do know they will only use them Saturdays for 2010. So you can see lap times and have a better grip on what your running and what the leaders are doing. You do not have to use them if you do not wish too, yet. But I would think that in no time they will be the norm and used in all our series. In this area, we are bit behind most of the country a bit. But I like the idea and welcome it 100%. Maybe you'll find live timing and scoring too very soon. That would be killer for the guys not able to get Saturday's practices or the injured riders at home and so on. So look for some great things in 2010.

This update's all about the 2009 champions. And it was only possible be cause of really hard work and great photos by JimBullPhoto.com and JC Benson as well. With out them, these awards would not have possible. Many of you know JC and myself both missed a few rounds of the MDRA series. GMXR.net had to make a tough choice in June when the Ultimate Series and MDRA had opposing dates. And though the E-Town track and crew was awesome to GMXR.net. I may have made the wrong choice that weekend. But hine sights always 20/20 right?  And I still feel as a Gold Level sponsor of the Ultimate Series I made that right call in that manner. But never the less the point was it was surely a tough ass season on myself, and my help JC Benson and Jace Wade as well. We did make it threw and we did our best  to give something back to you the racers, customers and our fans. When you see Jim and JC be sure to give them a shout out for their great hard work all year long, as well as the help with season ending awards for the MDRA in 2009.

All these guys did a great job in 2009. And some of them did exactly what you need to do to win titles. Make all the rounds and stay healthy! That is as much of a part of racing as any other part. Yes, skill is required. None of these guys are without that. They all put in a great year in 2009, stayed healthy and hit all the MDRA races they could and I want to say congratulations to all of them.....

If you do not see yourself here, you will be on the next update this week. A great job was done by all involved and not just the winners. Next year I am hoping to be even a bigger part of the series under the EastMX.com tent. And I would also like to have even more and better awards for 2010. I would like to making these posters for many years to come. And little guys like Jacob Moose #881 pictured above, can look back over the many years of awards when he's a 250 B champion one day maybe, and see all the years behind him? That's the goal anyways. I know many of you asked about duplicate posters for sponsors, your local shops and more. And some of you want them made for you and or your kids. I am working on a reasonable price list now. Duplicates of winners cost less than new posters all together. I will post the price list on the second update for the MDRA winners this week. Thank you all for your kind words and support. I have to give one last shout out to EastMX.com girl Karin for helping hand out the awards. Many kids had just way to much stuff to carry around by themselves. Thanks to all of you from GMXR.net!
